Live Polling Basics

Live polling is an active learning tool that you can use to engage students by embedding interactive questions into slides and hosting live quizzes. Make the classroom experience more dynamic and collaborative by using GILGA (Guided Inquiry Learning Group Activities) and Cooperative quizzes. These active learning quizzes encourage student participation and peer interaction.
Getting Started
When you log-in to your account, you will see your courses on your dashboard. After clicking on a course, you will find the "Live (Beta)" tile at the bottom.
Live Polling Dashboard
After you click on "Live (Beta)" tile, you will be directed to a live polling dashboard. This dashboard keeps track of all the quizzes you've created, slides that are uploaded and attendance sessions.
Create a quiz
How to Create a Quiz?
Click on Quiz.
Click + icon from the top navigation bar.
Select the question type.

- Hover over create button
Hovering over "Create" button opens two options: "Quizzes" and "Slides." Click on Quiz.
- Add Title and Description
Click “Quiz”, and add a title and description (optional). After which, you can start adding the questions
- Add Questions
Click the "+" button on the top bar will open a dropdown menu. From here, you can choose the activity type you wish to add.

Upload Slides
Hover over the 'Create' button on the top-left corner and click Upload slides to upload a PDF or ppt.
- Add Questions
After uploading slides, you can add questions in between slides to increase classroom interaction.
Click the "+" button on the top bar will open a dropdown menu. From here, you can choose the activity type you wish to add.

Delete a Question
Click the delete icon at the bottom right corner of the quiz card. A pop-up will ask for confirmation, "Are you sure you want to delete?"
Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion or "No" to cancel it.
Duplicate a Question
Click on the duplicate icon next to the delete icon at the bottom right corner of the question card. Once duplicated, it will appear just below the original question.
Question Settings
Each question you create in the quiz comes with a set of customizable options located on the right side. These settings let you tailor each question to fit your educational goals:
Activity Mode: Some question types offer different activity modes. After you've written the question, you can switch between these modes to make the question more engaging and interactive.
Prompt for beam: This option is available for some question types - Digram, Fill in the blanks and Matching. This allows you to choose the activity mode as questions are displayed during live polling.
Difficulty Level: Adjust the difficulty of the question.
Bloom's Level: Set the cognitive level according to Bloom's Taxonomy.
Grade Points (Efficacy Points + Participation Points):
Efficacy Points: Assign efficacy points to the question.
Participation Points: Assign points just for attempting the question, regardless of whether the answer is right or wrong.
Advanced Settings:
Timer: Set a time limit for students to answer the question.
Question Types (Cooperative or Individual): This allows you to direct questions for a specific mode during the cooperative quiz beam.
Arrange the Questions
To move a question card, click and drag the double bar icon "=" located at the centre top of the card. You can drag it vertically to reposition the card wherever you want within the quiz.
Edit a Quiz
Either click on the 'Quiz Title' or on the edit icon located at the bottom left corner of the card. Once clicked, the quiz will open in edit mode, allowing you to make any necessary changes.
Delete a Quiz
Click on the delete icon at the bottom left corner of the quiz card. A pop-up will ask for confirmation, "Are you sure you want to delete?" Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion or "No" to cancel it.
Beam a quiz/slide
Once you’ve finished adding questions, click on the “Beam” button on the top right to beam/present it to the class section of your choice.
How to beam a quiz/slide?
You can beam a quiz in two ways:
a. While authoring/editing the beam
Click on the beam button in the top-right corner.
b. From the quizzes dashboard
To beam a quiz from the quiz card, click beam from the bottom-left corner beside the edit button.
Select the class section.
Select the beaming mode.
Enable or disable the grading for participation and efficacy.
Create groups (Applicable only to group and cooperative modes)
Click start beam.
Finish a Beam
Click the Finish button at the right-bottom to finish the beam and assign the grades.
*Note:
Once the beam is finished, students are not allowed to continue and the grades will be automatically assigned.
Exit a Beam
Student-Paced Beam (free play mode)
It’s possible to exit the beam without finishing it. Click on “Exit” you’ll see a pop-up message with two options:
Pause beam for students and exit.
Pauses the beam for everyone. The beam can be resumed by clicking on the 'Resume' button over the quiz card later.
2. Allow students to continue.
Allows students to continue with the quiz after you exit, you can join back by clicking on 'resume' or finish the beam later by clicking on the 'finish' button.
Instructor-Led Beam
When you click on exit, the beam will pause for students. You can resume the beam or finish it.
Resume a Beam
Click the Resume button from the right side of the quiz card.

While starting the beam
Access the settings located in the bottom-left corner, the following settings can be adjusted:
Standard beam's advance setting:
In standard beam advance setting is divided into two sections:
1. General setting
Beam Play Modes: Change from student-paced (standard) to instructor-led beam.
Confidence Level: This option allows students to indicate how confident they feel about their answer after submitting it, helping measure their understanding.
2. Feedback setting
Choose when to provide feedback: Immediate (after each question) or after the beam finishes.
Enable or disable grade points as feedback.
Enable or disable correct response as feedback.
Group mode's advanced setting:
In group mode advanced setting is divided into two sections:
1. General setting
Beam Play Modes: Change from student-paced (standard) to instructor-led beam.

Show Question to: Control the visibility of the question on students’ screen - whether it’s ‘limited to the writer’, writer and reporter, or visible to everyone.

3. Individual mode penalty:
In Cooperative Mode, you can enable a penalty for students in group mode. If they don’t reach the set threshold, they will receive the penalty you’ve added.
Individual Mode Performance Threshold: In Cooperative Mode, if a student's score falls below this threshold, their Group Mode score will be penalized.
Penalty for Group Mode: Set the percentage (%) by which a student's Group Mode score will be reduced if their Individual Mode score is below the threshold.
When the beam is live.
You can open settings by clicking on the settings icon at the bottom.
Standard Modes
In standard mode, it has two options:
Change to Student-Paced Beam or Instructor-Led mode.
Group Modes
In group mode, it has two options:
Add or modify groups: Allow you to make the following changes in groups:
- Move group members from one to other groups.
- Create a new group and add new members or move the other group members.Change to Student-Paced Beam or Instructor-Led mode
Cooperative Mode
In cooperative mode, it has two options:
Add or modify groups:
Make real-time adjustments to groups during live polling with ease:
- Move group members from one group to another group.
- Create a new group and add new members or move the other group members.Finish individual beam for all students (In Individual mode): Finish the individual beam for all the students and start the group mode.
Change to Student-Paced Beam or Instructor-Led mode (In Group mode)
Beam Play Modes
An instructor can host a beam in two modes:
Instructor-Led Beam
You have full control of the beam (similar to a presentation). Students will only see the questions or slides that you choose to display.
The bottom toolbar includes the following options:
Beam Overview: The first icon on the left. Click to see all questions or slides in the beam. Use the arrows in the top-right corner to navigate.
Add Whiteboard: Add a whiteboard that all students in the quiz can see. (Instructor-led mode only)
Open: The question is open for students to answer.
Closed: The question is closed, and students cannot answer.
Review: See an overview of student responses (e.g., 4 students chose option A, 6 chose B, etc.).
Answer: Shows the correct answers. For path-tracing questions, you can mark answers as correct or incorrect.
Arrows: On the left and right, use these to move between the different states (Open, Closed, Review, and Answer).
Next/Previous Buttons: Navigate between questions.
Question Settings: Click the three dots next to the "Next" button to access beam settings.
Finish Button: Ends the beam.
*Note: The "Add Whiteboard" option is only available in Instructor-led mode.
Student-Paced Beam (FREE PLAY MODE)
Students can attempt the questions at their own pace. The next question/slide gets unlocked only when the students answer the question they are on.
This mode includes the following settings in the bottom toolbar:
Beam Overview: This is the first icon on the toolbar from the left. Click it to view all the questions or slides in the beam. Use the right and left arrows (located in the top-right corner) to navigate between slides.
Answer: Shows the correct answers provided by students. For path-tracing questions, you can mark answers as correct or incorrect.
Arrows: Located on the left and right, allowing you to move between different states (Open, Closed, Review, and Answer).
Next/Previous Buttons: Use these to navigate between questions.
Question View: This allows you to see the beam in question view and review student answers.
Group View: Displays the beam in group view, helping you monitor group progress in real-time.
Question Settings: Click the three dots next to the "Next" button to access beam settings.
Finish Button: Click this to end the beam.

Take an Attendance
Click 'Class Sections' to go to the attendance dashboard.
The dashboard contains class section cards, which allow you to either take attendance or view the attendance report for that class section.
- How to Take Attendance?
Steps to follow:
Find the Class: On the attendance dashboard, locate the class section card for which you want to take attendance.
Start the Process: Click the "Take Attendance" button on that card.
Fill in the Details (Pop-up window):
Select the Date: Choose the relevant date (today or a past date).
Assign Points: Decide if you want to give points for attendance and how many. You can also disable grading if needed.
Attendance Session Name: Add a descriptive name for this attendance session.
Set a Timer: Adjust the timer if you need to. The default is 3 minutes. (Note: You can't set a timer for past dates)
Passcode: Decide if you want students to use a passcode to mark their attendance. (Note: Passcodes can't be used for past dates)
Begin or Cancel:
Click "Start" to begin the attendance session.
Click "Cancel" to close the pop-up without starting the session.
Gradebook
The live polling and attendance grades are saved in your grade book as soon as you finish the live polling and attendance session.
